Gordmans plans to relocate its Lincoln store to a new, smaller building on North 27th Street .
The Omaha-based discount retailer is building a 55,000-square-foot store on the lot next to Bed Bath & Beyond in the Lincoln Crossings shopping center at 27th and Superior streets.
Other tenants of the shopping center include Walmart, Sam's Club, Slumberland, Hy-Vee and Toys "R" Us.
According to building permits filed Wednesday, there is also a second building being built on the site for a new Famous Footwear location, although representatives of that company could not be reached Thursday for more details.
Gordmans said its new store is scheduled to open in late September.
The store will replace Gordmans' 101,000-square-foot store at 46th and Vine streets, where the company has been since 1983. Gordmans has had a store in Lincoln since 1969.
In a news release, Gordmans said the Lincoln store was among its best-performing stores in 2009. The company has 68 stores in 16 states, according to its Web site.
"We are incredibly proud of our 40-plus year history in Lincoln, and this new store is a reflection of our renewed long-term commitment to this market," said Jeff Gordman, president and CEO, in the release. "We are also very excited to introduce our newest store prototype, which should elevate the shopping experience of our guests by enabling us to better showcase our huge assortment of merchandise."
Among the features of the new store will be a children's theater, a sports-themed entertainment area and a streamlined store layout, the company said.
Gordman said the new store concept, despite being smaller, is much more efficient at optimizing selling space, and Gordmans, "will absolutely be carrying everything that we do in our current location."
